Rockerville, SD was the place to be in 1876 due to the discovery of gold. By 1880, it was booming with hundreds of buildings and a population of around a thousand hopeful gold miners. Rockerville, named for the abundant use of the rocker box method used to separate gold from sand and gravel, made national headlines for over a decade during its time and was one of the most well-known mining towns in the Black Hills. While growth and development are inevitable, these historic buildings are still standing in the small community.
