In 1990, Jon Crane visited Stonington, a town on Deer Isle, Maine. Incorporated in 1789, Deer Isle is a small coastal community known for its granite quarries, whose stone was used in the construction of the Smithsonian Institution. Inspired by this trip, Jon created his watercolor painting "Deer Isle." Years later, he inherited a sketch of the same area by his great-great-grandfather, Alfred Waud. Though separated by decades and unaware of each other's connection to the place, both artists found Deer Isle to be a compelling subject.
